January 28th, 2012
Many people have problems with their digestive systems such as constipation, semi-liquid stool, irregular stool, irritable bowel syndrome, etc. In a vast majority of IBS cases taking psyllium husk powder provides dramatic improvements. Someone recently reported that taking powdered psyllium husk helped her expel an intestinal worm (Ascaris) which was 30 cm long! Blond psyllium is often excellent in treating a variety of intestinal disorders.
Psyllium seed (Plantago ovata) is an excellent non-caloric source of soluble fibre (eight times better than oat bran), which supports a healthy and regular bowel and helps to normalize the levels blood sugar and cholesterol. Psyllium is grown in large quantities in north-western India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.
The psyllium seed is composed almost exclusively of hemicellulose, which acts in the gut like a sponge, giving consistency to the stool, stimulating peristalsis and facilitating healthy digestion. Its action is purely mechanical; the body does not assimilate it so it can be used as a laxative without risk of addiction or toxicity.
A healthy colon is the first line of host defence. Overexposure to environmental pollutants and food products, processed foods, excessive caffeine or alcohol, stress, lack of exercise and the use of antibiotics can produce a state of chronic toxicity in the bowel. These soluble fibre in psyllium husk powder helps to accelerate the transit of mucus, toxins and metabolic wastes from the body, this contributes towards the maintenance of healthy colon and intestinal function.
Since 1997, the FDA allows U.S. distributors of psyllium to mention the inverse correlation between consumption of soluble fibre and the risk of coronary heart disease. Given its low cost and its many benefits, a daily intake of 5 grams of psyllium husk is a good recommendation.
Take 5 grams per day in glass of water. Drink before the liquid turns into a gel. Beware: if you do not add enough water the resulting mixture will be hard to swallow.
