A Heartbeat in the Head: The Pulsating Tinnitus
November 30th, 2011
A pulsating tinnitus is that common occurrence a lot of people experience when, all of a sudden, you hear a beating sound coming from inside your ear. You are sure it did not come from anywhere else other than what can only be from inside your ear, and you start to worry if there may be something inside that ear that is actually causing that sound, like a tiny bug or bacteria. Luckily for you, however, it is such a common occurrence that one should not outrightly worry.
Pulsatile tinnitus, unlike common tinnitus, produces more of a beating sound than a regular ringing sound. Sometimes even, it sounds like a heartbeat. Whatever the case, it is caused by irregular blood flow stemming from head or neck injuries or activities preventing the regular blood flow to the head. It may also be caused by improper diet causing low or high blood pressure.
To treat tinnitus, you have to watch what you eat. Avoid salty and fatty foods to lower the risk of high and low blood pressure, and most often you have to avoid activities that strain the neck or prevent the blood flow to come to your head. In a nutshell, just live a healthy life. Treating pulsatile tinnitus may also be done through regular exercise so oxygen may ease the blood flow, as well as avoiding very loud noises that could damage nerve endings in the ear. To treat tinnitus, one must also be aware that underlying medical conditions might actually be the causes, so see your physician for other medical conditions that may plague the body. Finally, have the discipline to regularly check your blood flow.
